Fantasy Football’s Who to Trade, Trade For, and Sit On

Your guide to post-week 1 fantasy football advice.

I know it’s early and the season is only a week old, but now is the time and also your best opportunity to improve your team!  The Fantasy Injury Bug has already hit some teams hard, especially for those of you that had B. Jacobs and E. Manning.  B. Jacobs is out 3 to 5 weeks if not longer.  Eli Manning is out at least a month.  You MUST find replacements for starters if you don’t have the depth to fill the holes.  With fantasy football, you can’t afford to fall behind.  Right now everyone is looking for the next M. Colston and M. Jones-Drew.  People always notice the players that get off to fast starts.  They are always thinking this could be the next fantasy stud that jumps out of no where.  With that said, let me break it down for you….

WHO TO TRADE

P. Burress, NYG  – This is a no brainer.  The running game went out the window when Jacobs was lost.  Manning is gone for a month, possibly more.  This team is in shambles.  Teams will now focus their attention on shutting Burress down.  He won’t have higher value than he does right now.

J. Witten, DAL   – Witten finished with 1 TD in 2006.  In 2005, Witten had 6 TD’s.  Witten is a lock to finish with around 700 yards, but Witten isn’t a main target in Dallas.  Test the waters.  There are a lot of Cowboys fans out there.  You never know, you might surprise yourself with what you can get in return for Witten.

L. Johnson, KC  – KC is in trouble.  Their offense is pathetic.  L. Johnson doesn’t have holes to hit and is facing stacked defensive fronts.  The offensive line isn’t the same.  If you can find someone willing, trade Larry Johnson.  The name alone might be able to bring you a guy like B. Westbrook in return.

S. Jackson, STL  – Jackson will still put up good numbers, but he isn’t going to be the 2nd best fantasy player after losing Orlando Pace.  That is a huge blow for St Louis.  You probably can get anything you want for Jackson other than LT.  I would recommend doing it before his value drops

M. Bulger, STL  – O. Pace is gone for the year, T. Holt isn’t 100%, I. Bruce is old and washed up, and D. Bennett was a waste of money.  I just don’t see Bulger being a top 5 fantasy QB.

T. Romo, DAL   – T. Glenn is out for who knows how long.  Romo tore up the Giants defense, but a lot of teams will do that this year.  You will get the most value out of Romo right now.  Trading him could improve your team and fill any holes you have.

L. Coles, NYJ   – The fans in NY are one of a kind.  Watching people cheer for a player getting hurt is a disgrace to the city.  That being said, a QB battle could be brewing.  There appears to be some turmoil going on in Jets land.  Coles didn’t produce a ton of yards, but most people only pay attention to td’s, which Coles had 2 of.  Coles might still have a good year, but I would test his value on the market.

R. Brown, MIA  - Miami’s offensive line is terrible.  Miami can’t run the ball.  Now it appears that Brown is sharing some of the carries which is cause for concern.  Brown will end up being a fantasy bust this year, not worthy of being your team’s #2 RB.

C. Portis, WAS  - You will get value for Portis right now after a decent opening week.  Trade him before he gets hurt and before you aren’t able to get something in return.  This isn’t a reliable fantasy player, which is always a cause for concern.

WHO TO TRADE FOR

D. Jackson, SF  - If you watched the 49ers game last night you noticed two things.  (1) D. Jackson and A. Smith don’t have their timing down and (2) A. Smith loves throwing the ball Jackson’s way.  Jackson is already Smith’s go to guy.  Jackson was a dropped 40 yard td pass away from having a great fantasy game.  The 49ers offense won’t continue to struggle as they did Monday Night.  D. Jackson is a #3 WR in most leagues.  I strongly believe he will be a definite #2 WR by the end of the year.

L. Fitzgerald, ARI  – As San Francisco, Arizona won’t struggle like they did last night.  N. Clements shut Fitzgerald down.  It’s safe to say that Fitzgerald won’t have 20 yards or less receiving again this year.

L. Evans, BUF  - Terrible stats in week 1 as the Champ was covering Evans.   Week 2 shouldn’t be as bad as Buffalo travels to Pittsburgh who doesn’t have the strongest secondary.  Trade for Evans.

WHO TO SIT ON

D. Brees, NO  - Everyone expected New Orleans to put up big numbers on Indy.  It didn’t happen while New Orleans really struggled.  Bush wasn’t 100% healthy and New Orleans didn’t run to set up the pass.  Don’t worry or panic with Brees.  He will finish with top 5 numbers.

V. Davis, SF   - Davis didn’t jump out to the start most were expecting.  If it wasn’t for a dropped ball and a 1 yard completion, I wouldn’t even be sure he played.  V. Davis ended strong and this was just an off night for the entire SF offense.  Start Davis week 2.

L. Evans, BUF   - Evans had 5 receiving yards in week 1 and we all know why, Champ Bailey.  Don’t expect more of the same in week 2 when Buffalo travels to Pittsburgh.  Pittsburgh has a strong defense, but their secondary has holes. Evans might not have a great game week 2, but he will get back to form and put up better numbers.

D. McAllister, NO - New Orleans didn’t run the ball, that’s the only reason McAllister didn’t do more against the Indy defense.  McAllister won’t be getting 25 carries a game, but he should finish with 10 td’s on the year.

T. Jones, NYJ  - Yes Jones is a little beat up, but he is a solid #2 RB.  The Jets fell behind early and were forced to throw.  They Jets should remain close in most of their games this season which means a lot of carries for Jones.

College Football Recruiting 2008 Top 25 Rankings

College Football Recruiting Top 25 Classes

Top 25 College

1. NOTRE DAME

I know it’s early, but Notre Dame’s 2008 recruiting class is currently ranked #1 and absolutely LOADED.  With many prospect still undecided, I look for Notre Dame to gain momentum and eventually secure up a top 5 recruiting class in 2008.  As of right now, Notre Dame has added a ton of talent on the defensive side of the ball.  This class has an incredible amount of talent and speed, both of which are a must for a defense that has really struggled over the past few years.  Notre Dame is on the right track and with a few more recruiting classes of this level will be back in the Championship picture within the next 2 or 3 years.  I look for MLB Steve Filer, DE Ethan Johnson, and TE Kyle Rudolph to step in immediate and have a major impact.  Notre Dame also received a verbal commitment from Dayne Crist, a 5 star QB from Sherman Oaks, CA.  This young man has tremendous talent and apparently loves competition.  In 2007, Notre Dame recruited a 10 year prospect in Jimmy Clausen.  With that said, let me breakdown the prospects who have already committed…

Notre Dame

2. USC

This is the beginning of another top USC recruiting class.  USC already has verbal commitments from four of the nations top WR’s.  Look for D.J. Shoemate and Brice Butler to have a chance to start as freshman.  Brice Butler has the makings of a star and I believe he might be the next great WR at USC.  This year’s recruiting class looks to bolster and fill the need of WR at Southern Cal.

USC

3. Oklahoma

This is another great recruiting start for the Sooner Nation.  With four top 100 recruits, this has all of the makings of a top 5 class.  Oklahoma has two great prospects, Jermie Calhoun and Justin Johnson, to step in and fill the gap left by the departure of Adrian Peterson.   As usual, Oklahoma is having great success recruiting in the state of Texas.  Bob Stoops continues to add talent to Oklahoma.  This class will add balance to the offense and a QB of the future, Landry Jones.

Oklahoma

4. Miami (FL)

Miami has put the lockdown on SW Florida.  This years recruiting class will soon be playing at the home of the Miami Dolphins as the Canes will be switching their home stadium.  As of right now, Miami’s best recruits will be on the defensive side of the ball, but watch out for Jacory Harris and Aidarius Johnson.  This has the makings of a great QB/WR combo.  Aidarius Johnon has great size and speed and should translate well to the college game.

Miami

5. Ohio State

Right now Ohio St only has 11 verbal commitments, but quality is the key word here.  Ohio St is getting the best of the best.  Ohio State’s top recruits are all on the offensive side of the ball.  The offensive line will be adding 3 tremendous players; Shugarts, Brewster, and Adams.    DeVier Posey will have a chance to contribute as a freshman.  DeVier will add speed and toughness to Ohio St.  He is a perfect fit for the University.  Ohio St is a national power house when it comes to recruiting.  Not many schools can enter the state of Florida and land the state’s top offensive lineman.

Ohio State

6. Texas

The longhorns secondary struggled at times last year, but look for that to end with the addition of Aaron Williams.  Aaron is a shut down CB and has absolutely dominated high school football in the state of Texas.  As usual, Mack Brown has not needed to look outside the state of Texas in order to find its talent.  Texas also has a great group of WR’s.  Desean Hales, Dan Buckner, and Antoine Hicks are all very talented.  Dan Buckner will be a star and a fan favorite.  He has tremendous size, 6-4, and great speed.  Remember his name.

Texas

7. UCLA

UCLA is on the verge of consistently being a top 25 team.  There is no reason that UCLA shouldn’t finish in the top 25 year in and year out, especially in recruiting.  California is ALWAYS rich in talent and USC can only accept so many of the top athletes.  This year, UCLA has a great class, and it’s just the beginning.  This class is so balanced on both sides of the ball.  I believe we will see an immediate impact.  Rahim Moore, Anthony Dye, and Aaron Hester are the secondary of the future.  Anthony Dye has Olympic speed and is great playmaker.  With classes like this, UCLA beating USC will be no fluke.

UCLA

8. Nebraska

Nebraska has gone across the US in order to have a top 2008 recruiting class.  Blaine Gabbert is the QB of the future and will be an NFL Prospect.  Jones Gray has blistering speed and is always a threat when he touches the ball.  Nebraska has always been known for their great offensive lines.  This year’s commitments will add to that tradition.  A sleeper to keep an eye on from this class is the underrated D. J. Woods.  Woods runs a 4.36 and has good size for a WR at 6-0.

Nebraska

9. Georgia

As usual, Georgia has the makings of another strong class.  DeAngelo Tyson can dominate games from the tackle position.  Georgia is continuing to have great success in its own state.  The bulldogs are adding talent to the skilled positions.  A.J. Green is one of the top WR in the country.  Somehow, Georgia was able to pull him away from Spurrier and the Gamecocks.  Green has great size for a WR and excellent speed!

Georgia

10. Florida State

Bobby Bowden has always recruited well and this year’s class will follow the tradition.  Florida State has already received commitments from three 5-star players.  E.J. Manuel will be the savior at the QB position that FSU has lacked over the past few years.  FSU always has great LB’s.  This year, they are adding Nigel Bradham and Nigel Carr.  Both have a chance to play immediately and could have an immediate impact on the Seminoles defense.  FSU usually finishes strong, but this year, they are off to a great start.  Look for FSU to have a top 5 class when all is said and done.

Florida State

Keep an eye out for the teams ranked 11-25. A breakdown of each team will be posted to the site within the next few days!

Fantasy Football Sleepers and Busts

Greg Gammell’s view on the top sleepers and busts for 2007.

SLEEPERS

QB - J. Garcia, Tampa Bay - What Jeff Garcia did last year in Philadelphia last year was no fluke.  In Philadelphia, Garcia was throwing to D. Stallworth and R. Brown.  In Tampa, Garcia will be throwing to J. Galloway and another player that I think with bounce back, M. Clayton.  Garcia will be under the supervision of a coach that will utilize Jeff to his fullest capability.  John Gruden is a smart guy with an West Coast Offensive mind.  Look for Garcia to have a solid year and keep Tampa Bay in playoff contention til the very end.

QB - E. Manning, New York Giants - Look back at his final stats from last year and you might be surprised, they weren’t bad.

3,244 Total Passing Yards
24 Td’s
18 Int’s

These numbers won’t blow you away, but they are solid numbers for a fantasy QB.  The Giants lost Tiki Barber, but I believe E. Manning will pick up the slack and throw for 28 Td’s this year with fewer Int’s.  I definitely believe E. Manning will silence many critics and produce a top 6 fantasy year among the Qb’s.

RB - W. McGahee, Baltimore - McGahee is a HUGE improvement over J. Lewis.  Baltimore possesses a solid offensive line and a well balanced attack.  This will open up lanes for McGahee.  I believe at year end, McGahee has the potential to be a top 5 fantasy back.  He is worth a pick late in the first round / early second round.

RB - C. Williams, Tampa Bay - Yes, Cadillac will bounce back from his injury plagued year and have a solid season for the Bucs.  Jeff Garcia will provide stability at the Qb position which is something Tampa didn’t have last year.  Cadillac will increase his touches and catch more passes out of the backfield.  Cadillac has a lot of potential so take the chance on this guy in a year where everyone seems to be down on him.

WR - A. Johnson, Houston - First off, let me start by saying  that I’m not sure M. Schuab is a better QB than David Carr.  Also, the offensive line must improve. But, I believe that A. Johnson’s Td’s will increase this season.  Johnson has another year under his belt and I think the addition of McKardell will help.  Adding A. Green should help the ground attack which in return will help the passing attack.  This will be the year that A. Johnson becomes a legitimate #1 fantasy WR.

WR - D. Jackson, San Francisco - D. Jackson is a #1 WR in the NFL.  D. Jackson is underrated and under appreciated.  Alex Smith has another year under his belt as the starter.  Vernon Davis is going to flourish this year as the 49ers TE.  Alex Smith will find Darrell Jackson, and he will find him often.  The 49ers will make a run into the playoff and surprise a lot of people by how balanced their offensive attack will be.

WR - D. Mason, Baltimore - I look for Mason to back to his old form.  Mason and McNair will go back to their days in Tennessee.  I see Mason having 80 receptions, 1,000 yards, and 7 TD’s this year.

TE - V. Davis, San Fransisco - This is the year that the 49ers offense is back.  Vernon Davis will emerge as an elite TE.  I believe V. Davis will finish 3rd among all TE’s behind Antonio Gates and Todd Heap.

BUSTS

QB - V. Young, Tennessee - Tennessee lost Drew Bennett and T. Henry.  Vince Young will now be the sole focus of every defense that Tennessee faces.  Name me the rest of the Titans WR’s…  WHO will Vince throw to?  Michael Vick was always suppose to take off as a top fantasy QB, but that never happened.  Until Vince has some go to WR’s, don’t tell me he is a fantasy stud.

RB - L. Maroney, New England - I personally believe people are too high on the often injured Maroney.  When healthy, he is a stud.  The problem is that Maroney is never healthy.  He always has nagging injuries.  Now that C. Dillon is gone, Maroney will take all of the punishment.  My guess is that Maroney won’t hold up.

RB - M. Lynch, Buffalo - Lynch was a stud at Cal, but he wasn’t better than McGahee was at Miami.  Lynch won’t post better numbers than McGahee, period.  As long as Losman is the starting QB, defenses will be stocking up against the run and making Losman beat them….  That won’t happen, ever.

WR - M. Colston, New Orleans - I’m not saying that Colston will be a flop, but I don’t see him projected as a top 10 fantasy WR.  I see him having a drop off from last years stats due to the fact that he will be getting every teams #1 CB.

WR - L. Evans, Buffalo - JP Losman.  Enough said.

WR - R. Moss, New England - Moss is a cancer.  He takes plays off, doesn’t try, and rarely gives 100%.  That won’t float in New England.  I predict that Moss will be cut at some point this season once they realize that the change of scenery wasn’t the fix.

TE - A. Crumpler, Atlanta - This is another easy one.  Joey Harrington.  It’s just that simple.  Harrington hasn’t been successful anywhere.  Mark Atlanta down as another failed Harrington trial.
